The maximum is Four years. Under HMRC’s rules, a taxpayer can claim a tax refund going back to a maximum of 4 tax years. Currently, you can only claim a tax refund going back as far as 6th April 2018, which is the 2018-19 tax year. Tax refund claims related to previous tax years are not accepted by HMRC.
The paper version can take up to 8 months but from 2020-21 the online version processing will take 4-6 weeks.
