Four years. Under HMRC's rules, a taxpayer can claim a tax refund going back to a maximum of 4 tax years. Currently, you can only claim a tax refund going back as far as 6th April 2011, which is the 2011-12 tax year. Tax refund claims related to previous tax years are not accepted by HMRC.
