In the United Kingdom, a tax return is a document that some individuals must file with HMRC (the official name of the UK tax office) in order to declare their income and personal circumstances. Based on the figures and answers they provide, HMRC calculate the taxpayer’s liability for income tax (meaning, how much tax becomes due).
Taxpayers can file a tax return on paper format, using the form “SA100” (along with various “supplementary pages”, depending on the taxpayer’s circumstances). They can also file a tax return online via HMRC’s secure portal.
